Business card with glossy laminate finish

Business Card Lamination Finishes Compared: Gloss, Matte, Soft Touch, and Sand

Most people spend their time picking a logo colour and forget that the finish on a business card does just as much work. It's the first thing a hand actually feels, and it changes how the card reads before anyone looks at the type. PeakPrint prints four lamination finishes on business cards - gloss, matte, soft touch, and sand - each available in a Standard 19pt weight and a thicker Premium 24pt weight. Here's what actually separates them.

Gloss Lamination

Standard Gloss Lamination is the finish most people picture when they think "laminated business card" - a high-shine coating that makes colour pop and gives the card a slick, reflective surface. It resists fingerprints and wear well, which makes it a practical pick for anyone handing cards out constantly. The Premium Gloss Lamination version uses the same finish on a noticeably thicker stock - nearly double the thickness of an economy card - for a heavier, more substantial card that still keeps that bold shine.

Matte Lamination

Standard Matte Lamination trades shine for a smooth, non-reflective surface that mutes colour slightly but reads as clean and modern. It's a common choice for brands that don't want their card catching glare under office lighting or camera flash at a networking event. Premium Matte Lamination steps up to extra-thick cardstock with a silkier finish, aimed at brands that want the understated look to also feel substantial in hand.

Soft Touch Lamination

This is the finish people comment on. Standard Soft Touch Lamination has a velvety, suede-like texture under an ultra-matte finish - it's genuinely satisfying to hold, which is exactly why it shows up so often with beauty and cosmetics brands and other businesses selling a premium feel first. Premium Soft Touch Lamination puts that same texture on super-thick cardstock for an even heavier, more luxurious card.

Sand Lamination

The least common of the four, and that's part of the appeal. Standard Sand Lamination has a distinctive gritty, sand-like texture that people tend to run their fingers over more than once - a good fit for creative, industrial, or premium brands that want a card that feels different from what's in the rest of the stack. Premium Sand Lamination carries that texture onto premium super-thick stock for extra grip and presence.

Which one should you order?

If you're not sure, gloss is the safe, high-impact default and matte is the safe, understated one. Reach for soft touch when the business is selling a feeling - beauty, wellness, real estate - and reach for sand when you want the card itself to be a talking point. Standard (19pt) covers most needs; Premium (24pt) is for brands that want the card to feel as substantial as the finish looks.
