Gloss vs. Matte vs. Soft-Touch Lamination: Which Finish Fits Your Product
Share
Lamination does two things at once: it protects the printed label from scuffing and moisture, and it changes how the finished piece looks and feels in someone's hand. The three common options read very differently, even on the exact same design.
Gloss
Gloss lamination is shiny and reflective, which makes colours look more vibrant and high-contrast — it's the finish that tends to catch the eye fastest on a shelf. The trade-off is that gloss shows fingerprints and light scratches more visibly than the other two options.
Matte
Matte lamination is non-reflective, giving a flatter, more muted look. It reads as understated and elegant, and it's noticeably better than gloss at hiding fingerprints and minor surface marks — a common pick for minimalist or premium branding that doesn't want a shiny finish.
Soft-touch
Soft-touch adds a velvety, tactile texture on top of a matte-like appearance — it's the finish people notice by touch before they notice by sight. It tends to hold up well against visible scratching and gives labels a distinctly premium feel, which is why it shows up often on gift and luxury packaging.
Quick decision
Want maximum shelf pop: gloss. Want an understated, clean look: matte. Want a premium, tactile unboxing feel: soft-touch. Our foil roll labels offer all three finishes if you want to compare them directly on the same label.
