Paper roll labels on a roll

How to Choose the Right Roll Label Material (Without the Guesswork)

Picking a label material sounds simple until you're staring at six options and none of them say what they're actually for. So here's the short version: the right material depends less on how you want the label to look and more on what it has to survive.

Start with where the label lives, not how it looks

A label on a bottle that lives in someone's fridge has a different job than a label on a shipping box sitting in a warehouse for six months. Before you pick a finish, ask what the label will be up against — moisture, sunlight, handling, temperature swings, or nothing at all beyond a shelf.

Paper Roll Labels

The default for a reason. Our paper roll labels use a smooth semi-gloss stock that prints vibrant colour and sharp text, backed by a permanent adhesive. They're built for short-term indoor use — dry goods, sealed sandwiches and beauty boxes, market cups, sale tags — anything that isn't getting wet or handled roughly. If your product sits on a shelf and stays there, paper is usually the right call, and there's no reason to pay more for durability you don't need.

Plastic (BOPP) Roll Labels

Our plastic roll labels are fully waterproof and moisture-resistant, and hold up to oils, chemicals, refrigeration, and everyday handling without smudging or breaking down. This is the one to reach for on food packaging, beverage bottles, cosmetics, skincare, and bath and body products — anywhere durability and a clean glossy finish both matter.

Clear Roll Labels

Same waterproof BOPP durability, but see-through, so the label reads as part of the packaging instead of sitting on top of it. Our clear roll labels are the “no-label label” — the go-to for beverage bottles, food packaging, cosmetics, candles, and anywhere you want the product itself to be the focal point.

Foil Roll Labels

When the label needs to look premium, not just survive, foil roll labels — available in gold or silver — add a reflective finish that stands out on a busy shelf, with gloss, matte, or soft-touch lamination for extra protection. A favourite for cosmetic brands, skincare lines, and specialty beverages that want a subtle hint of luxury.

Fluorescent Roll Labels

Fluorescent roll labels are built to be seen — bold, almost neon colour that's hard to miss on a shipping box, hazard warning, or retail sale tag. One thing worth knowing before you design: white ink isn't available on this stock, so black text on the fluorescent base gives the sharpest, most readable result.

Textured Roll Labels

For premium packaging where texture does some of the talking, textured roll labels come in four wet-strength stocks — Laid, Linen, Vellum, and Felt — built to hold up in ice buckets and cold-box storage without losing their look. A strong fit for wine, beverages, and gourmet food.

When in doubt

Default to what the label has to survive, not what looks best on screen — a beautiful label that peels off in the fridge isn't doing its job. Still not sure which material fits? Browse all six roll label materials and compare, or send us your specs and we'll point you to the right one.
