How to Measure Your Product for the Right Box Size
Share
A box that's slightly too big means your product rattles around and looks under-filled. A box that's slightly too small means the lid won't close, or your item comes out crushed at the corners. Getting the size right the first time saves you a reprint — here's how to measure for it.
Measure the product, not the idea of the product
Start with the actual item, fully assembled, in whatever state it ships in — including any cap, pump, or attachment that adds height. If you're including an insert, tissue paper, or a second item in the box, measure with those in place, not just the product on its own.
Length, width, and height — in that order
Our box calculators ask for length, width, and height, and getting the order right matters: length is the longest side of the opening, width is the shorter side of the opening, and height is how deep the box stands when it's upright. Mixing these up is one of the easier ways to end up with a box that doesn't sit the way you expected.
Know your style's size range before you commit to a layout
Each box style has its own configurable range on the product page — as of this writing, our tuck end and lock bottom styles run roughly 2"-8" for length, 1"-4" for width (2"-4" on some styles), and 1"-7" for height. If your product falls outside that window, tell us before you finalize artwork — we'd rather adjust the plan early than have you find out after a dieline is already built.
Match the style to what's inside
Straight Tuck End and Reverse Tuck End boxes are built for lightweight items — cosmetics, small gifts, travel-size products. Lock Bottom and Auto Lock Bottom boxes add an interlocking base for heavier contents like creams, candles, and sprays. Sizing right only gets you halfway there if the base isn't rated for the weight you're putting in it.
Still not sure? Ask before you order
If your product is an odd shape or right on the edge of a size range, it's faster for us to confirm fit before production than to troubleshoot after. Browse all our packaging styles to compare, or reach out with your product's dimensions and we'll tell you what fits.
